The jaw joints are stable and the masticatory muscles are relaxed. All lateral, canine and front teeth move harmoniously with each other when the lower jaw is opened and closed. Normally, the distance between the upper and lower jaws at rest is two to four millimetres. The two only touch briefly when swallowing.<\/p><p>If tooth structure is lost, the distance between the upper and lower jaws also increases. If the two are more than eight millimetres apart, this is referred to as a lowered bite. The teeth then often no longer make contact with their opposing teeth. In some cases, the inside of the tooth is exposed. The result: shortened front and canine teeth can no longer guide the bite harmoniously. Healthy occlusion is disrupted. The result: the chewing pattern develops from a functional vertical pattern to a horizontal pattern, similar to that of a ruminant.<\/p><p>Contact points in a healthy dentition become contact surfaces. It is important to note that \u2018chewing power = force per area\u2019. The larger the surface area, the harder the chewing muscles have to work to generate chewing performance. This causes the chewing muscles (and also the auxiliary chewing muscles) to hypertrophy.
