Combined maxillofacial surgical therapy
In some adult patients, the jaws are positioned incorrectly in relation to each other.
A satisfactory correction in these cases is often only possible through a combined orthodontic–maxillofacial surgical treatment.
During this treatment, the jaws are surgically repositioned to their correct alignment. This complex operation is performed exclusively by experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons in a hospital setting and takes between 3 and 6 hours.
An orthodontic pretreatment is required before the surgery to shape and align the dental arches. After the operation, both jaws are fixed with wires for about one week, and the patient can only eat and drink through a straw during this period. About 3–4 weeks later, fine orthodontic adjustments begin.
Jaw repositioning will alter your facial appearance. Please be aware that your facial features will change as a result of the procedure. Some patients have always wished for this change, while for others it can be a challenge.
