More InformationWhen a tooth is lost, it often affects not only our health but also our quality of life. With a dental implant, missing teeth, bridges, or even entire rows of teeth can be replaced — permanently. At KU64 Berlin, our specialists support you with high-quality tooth replacements on your journey to a confident, aesthetic smile and greater joy in life.
DENTAL IMPLANTS BERLIN – NEW ROOTS FOR STRONG TEETH INSTEAD OF DENTURES
Whether due to tooth migration, a broken tooth, or aesthetic concerns — the reasons for needing a replacement are as varied as the restoration options themselves. Professional dental implants are the most advanced form of tooth replacement in modern dentistry and can provide a long-term solution for individual or multiple missing teeth. For example, a single gap can be closed with a “new” tooth — without grinding down neighboring healthy teeth for a bridge. Aesthetics and natural chewing comfort are fully preserved. Dental implants are an optimal solution for regaining quality of life without gaps in your smile.
The implantology team at KU64 in Berlin-Charlottenburg delivers long-lasting results at the highest standard, thanks to cutting-edge technology and techniques, and a team of highly qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeons and implantologists.
Implants can also enhance existing dentures or ensure that a prosthesis is securely anchored. In many cases, thanks to what’s known as “additional support,” classic dentures can be avoided entirely. The palate remains free from plastic or metal, and the securely anchored teeth allow for confident chewing, biting, and smiling.
BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
- A dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth.
- Implants allow for much stronger biting than dentures and often make chewing easier.
- Professional implants preserve speech or even improve it compared to other tooth replacements.
- Unlike many bridges and dentures, implants help prevent bone loss in the jaw.
- Neighboring teeth remain intact when implants are placed.
- Implants cannot develop cavities.
- Artificial tooth roots (implants) can stabilize removable dentures or support fixed bridges.
LONG-LASTING AND STABLE: OUR IMPLANT MATERIALS
Today, most dental implants are made from titanium, as this material bonds best with bone. Titanium is well-researched, highly durable, and entirely biocompatible. Our implants come from leading manufacturers and feature a special bioactive surface to further accelerate healing.
Other materials, like zirconia, are also used. Zirconia is a ceramic material known for its high biocompatibility and is primarily used in dental restorations. These ceramic implants offer superior aesthetics and a particularly natural appearance.
IMPLANT PROCEDURE AT OUR BERLIN PRACTICE
Ideally, the implant is placed shortly after the gentle removal of a tooth. Precondition: the teeth, gums, and surrounding structures — in short, everything around the implant site — must be in a healthy condition. There’s little benefit in placing an expensive implant if gum disease or a lack of preventive care compromises long-term success. These factors should always be evaluated before treatment.
As a rule: the stronger the bone, the better the implant holds in the jaw.
Sinus lift: Bone augmentation for stable roots
Often, small bone deficiencies — such as a very thin jawbone — must be corrected in advance using the patient’s own bone or substitute materials. This is called bone augmentation. In this context, the term “sinus lift” is frequently used.
Placing the implant
To insert the implant after successful bone augmentation, the gum is carefully detached from the jaw at the planned site. A socket matching the exact shape of the implant is drilled into the bone, and the implant is screwed in. Finally, the gum is sutured, and healing begins.
Apart from a slight wound sensation, pain is usually manageable with mild painkillers. Depending on the extent of the procedure, swelling and bruising may occur during the first postoperative week. Over time, the implant bonds with the jawbone (osseointegration), which takes about eight weeks in the lower jaw and approximately twelve weeks in the upper jaw — with individual differences.
Attaching the dental restoration
In the third step, the implant is exposed again and the final tooth replacement is attached to the artificial root. This may be a single ceramic crown, a bridge, or a denture. Sometimes, several implants are connected with a bar onto which the denture is placed.
HOW BONE AUGMENTATION WORKS
Thanks to modern oral surgery, it’s now possible for almost every patient to have implants firmly anchored in the bone. If there’s insufficient bone in the jaw, augmentation under anesthesia is necessary. This can be done using:
the patient’s own bone
synthetic bone substitute materials
If there’s too little space in the sinus area, the sinus floor can be gently lifted via a sinus lift procedure.
By lifting the sinus floor, a small cavity is created above the jawbone. This space is then filled with bone grafts or substitutes, which harden within about four months. This method ensures the required stability for implants in the upper jaw (sinus lifts are only performed in the upper jaw).
Our team of experienced dentists and specially trained oral surgeons and implantologists will advise you on your individual situation. Planning your dental implants — from material selection to bone augmentation — is done jointly by your treating dentist and implantologist. Our in-house dental lab is also integrated into the planning process.
ALL EXPERTS UNDER ONE ROOF
In particularly complex cases, we offer 3D imaging to make sure nearby anatomical structures such as neighboring teeth, sinus cavities, and nerves are included in the planning. Your advantage: all specialists work together under one roof, right here in our Berlin dental practice. You won’t need to see any additional doctors during the planning phase.
PAIN-FREE TOOTH REPLACEMENT THANKS TO ANESTHESIA
For your comfort during longer procedures, our dental practice in Berlin has a dedicated surgical area and offers twilight sedation or general anesthesia. We take particular care with anxious patients and strive to make your entire experience — before, during, and after surgery — as pleasant as possible.
PREVENTIVE IMPLANT DIAGNOSTICS AT KU64 – A RARITY IN BERLIN DENTAL PRACTICES
To ensure optimal implant placement, we recommend diagnostic testing in advance with our specialist for oral and maxillofacial surgery Dr. Jan Wagner or our oral surgeon Dr. Surian Herrmann. Implant diagnostics involve assessing immunological (inflammatory), osteological (bone-related), and genetic risks that could jeopardize long-term implant success. Modern preventive medicine makes it possible to identify risk patients early and develop personalized treatment plans.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS
Can the body develop an allergy to titanium implants?
Titanium contains no allergens and is neutral in the body. It’s therefore ideal for professional dental implants.
Who is a candidate for dental implants?
Bone growth should be complete — typically by age 18. There’s no upper age limit for dental implants.
Is the implant procedure done on an outpatient basis?
Yes, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Multiple implants can also be placed at once.
Will health insurance cover the costs?
In most cases, statutory health insurance does not cover implant treatment. However, a fixed subsidy may apply. In rare cases, full coverage is possible if medically justified.
How long does the treatment take?
The process includes around five appointments. Healing takes 8–12 weeks, followed by exposure of the implant and impression-taking. The final restoration is typically placed after four to six months.
Will I be without teeth during healing?
No. Removable dentures are adjusted or provisional solutions are provided during healing.
Is a local anesthetic enough?
Yes. The procedure is painless, though some pressure or vibration may be felt. For patients who prefer to sleep through it, general anesthesia is available — Wednesdays at KU64 Berlin, with consultations on Mondays from 5–6 p.m.
What other anesthesia options exist?
In addition to local anesthesia, general anesthesia and twilight sedation are available. Sedation puts you in a sleep-like state without full unconsciousness and allows quicker recovery.
Are implants suitable for diabetics?
Yes, provided diabetes is well-managed. Patients should consult their primary care physician beforehand.
Do implants set off airport security alarms?
No, implants are not magnetic. If needed, show your implant ID card.
What do implants feel like?
Give yourself and your new teeth some time. The implant has no nerves and may feel different at first. You’ll adjust within about six months.
Any issues with pacemakers?
No, dental implants don’t emit electromagnetic signals.
Will I be on sick leave?
You may be temporarily off work, but recovery is usually quick.
Are there interactions with medications?
Yes, medications like cortisone or blood thinners may require adjustments. Please inform us in advance.
Are there risks with implantation?
Yes, it’s a minor surgery. Nerve or vessel injury is possible, but rare. 3D imaging helps minimize risks. Rejection is extremely uncommon.
Will it hurt?
You may experience a mild wound sensation. Most discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Severe pain is very rare.
Should I bleach my teeth before implantation?
Yes. Always whiten your natural teeth first to ensure the implant color matches perfectly.
Can I exercise after the procedure?
Avoid strenuous activities for the first few days.
How much do implants cost?
Costs vary based on the complexity and number of implants. We’ll provide a detailed treatment and cost plan free of charge.
How should I care for my teeth after implantation?
Brush as usual and use rinses. Titanium and ceramic implants are highly durable.
What is immediate implantation?
This is when an implant is placed immediately after a tooth is extracted.
What are alternatives to dental implants?
Root canal treatments or apicoectomies can preserve a non-vital tooth temporarily. However, implants are often the long-term solution.
