1. Welcome and Medical History: Your Concerns Come First
Before any instruments are used, the focus is on the conversation, without requiring you to lie down in the treatment chair straight away. Together, we go through the medical history form that you already completed on the iPad in the waiting area. We want to understand what brought you to KU64: Why are you looking for a new dentist? Are you experiencing any acute dental problems or do you have a fear of the dentist? And what is your aesthetic goal? Only once we understand your dental history and your expectations does the examination begin.
2. Examination: From the Jaw Joints to the Oral Mucosa
Now the actual examination begins – pain-free and systematic. We examine not only your teeth, but your entire oral cavity:
- Extraoral check: First, we examine your jaw joints and lymph nodes from the outside and check whether your chewing muscles are tense – a common sign of jaw problems such as teeth grinding or temporomandibular joint problems, which we refer to as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD).
- Intraoral check: We then examine each individual tooth for tooth decay, fractures and leaking filling margins.
- Periodontal screening (PSI): During periodontal screening (PSI), we measure your gum pockets in order to detect periodontitis at an early stage.
- Oral mucosa check: Finally, we examine your tongue and oral mucosa for any noticeable changes.
3. Digital Diagnostics: A Look Beneath the Surface
To complete the picture of your oral health, we need to look beneath the surface using digital X-rays. For this, we take an orthopantomogram (OPG), a digital panoramic image of the entire jaw, or targeted bitewing X-rays to assess tooth decay between the teeth and the condition of your jawbone. Using the intraoral camera, we take images directly inside your mouth and display them on the monitor in real time. This allows you to see exactly what we are examining as it happens.
4. Discussion and Consultation: Your Findings Summarized Clearly
Afterwards, your dentist will explain what the examination has revealed: clearly and without technical jargon. Together, we discuss what your teeth need, which steps should take priority and what treatment options are available.
5. Treatment Plan and Preventive Care: What Happens After Your First Appointment
At the end, we document the results of the examination digitally and discuss the next steps together. If you do not have time to brush your teeth beforehand, you can simply do so at our practice before your dental appointment. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are available for you. However, if you use a special toothpaste, please remember to bring it with you. Please also allow a few extra minutes for brushing your teeth at our practice.

The Cost of the Initial Examination at KU64
For new patients with statutory health insurance, the initial examination is a covered health insurance benefit and is paid for by your health insurance provider once a year. Most statutory health insurance providers recognize the personal consultation, clinical examination and periodontal screening as reimbursable services. It is worth checking the exact terms of your health insurance provider in advance. X-rays are not always necessary – but if they are required, they are not covered by statutory health insurance and are charged separately. At KU64, the cost is approximately 150 to 200 euros. In return, you receive images in 3D quality, taken with state-of-the-art equipment designed to minimize radiation exposure.
For patients with private health insurance, billing is based on the German Dental Fee Schedule (GOZ). Depending on the scope of the examination and your individual findings, the services required may vary. We disclose all costs in advance so that you know what to expect before anything is done.

The initial examination at KU64 goes beyond this: New patients also receive a detailed medical history assessment, a comprehensive evaluation and individual tips for their dental health – all based on a fixed checklist to ensure that nothing is overlooked during the first visit.
How Often Does Health Insurance Cover a Dental Check-Up?
Statutory health insurance providers cover the cost of a routine dental check-up once a year. Patients who are new to KU64 begin with an initial examination. This also counts as an annual health insurance benefit and is accepted by most health insurance providers without any issues. We recommend making consistent use of this entitlement and keeping your bonus booklet up to date, as a complete record of preventive check-ups is later required to qualify for higher health insurance benefits for more extensive treatments such as dental implants.
